What is the Average Cost for a Divorce?

Vertical Divider

Why You Can't Get a Straight Answer

Ask just about any attorney about the cost of a divorce and you will get a bunch of slippery answers that usually amount to the non-answer of "it depends".   And as much as that makes attorneys seem like snake oil salesmen it really is the only honest way to answer the question.

The question is like walking onto a car lot and asking "What is the average costs for a car?".  There is just no one size fits all answer.
If you insist on an average, then adding up attorney fees nationally it is $15,000 per person.  But that is a calculation including movie stars and celebrities on down to the very poor.  Its too much of an average to be useful information to an individual who is trying to get some sense of their own costs so they can make a decision.

If you have no property, no children and the other parties is available and willing to assist in all ways, and you are willing to do all the paperwork yourself, then you can probably get a quick divorce for around $500 including fees.

If you need to hire a lawyer because your property division is complex, your case involves children and/or there is high conflict, then in my experience the average divorce in League City Texas  costs anywhere from a low of $1,500 to a high of $50,000 or more.  Yes that is a very large range, but every case has it's own challenges.   The only sure metric is this:  CONFLICT = COSTS
